Why Idle Hours Matter More Than Mileage for Mixed Fleets

Mixed fleets—especially construction and municipal equipment—often travel fewer kilometers than long-haul trucks while burning more engine hours at idle. When we chart utilization using mileage alone, excavators and sweepers look underused even when crews depend on them daily.

Why mileage misleads on site equipment

GPS odometer readings capture road distance. They miss hours spent operating attachments, idling at load zones, or running auxiliary hydraulics. A paver may register 12 km in a week but accumulate 38 engine hours. Fleet managers know the machine was busy; the chart says otherwise.

How we chart idle without inflating active time

We define three buckets agreed in writing during kickoff:

  • Active: ignition on, vehicle moving above 3 km/h or attachment sensor active where available.
  • Idle: ignition on, below movement threshold, no attachment signal for more than five consecutive minutes.
  • Maintenance: hours flagged in shop system with work-order status "in progress" or vehicle tagged offline in dispatch.

Double-counting happens when telematics continues logging idle while a unit is in the shop bay. We subtract maintenance-window hours from idle totals when work orders confirm the vehicle is non-operational.

What to export from your telematics vendor

Request ignition-on duration, movement state, and—if equipped—PTO or attachment flags. CSV exports beat PDF summaries. Include internal unit IDs that match your dispatch board, not just license plates if those change seasonally.
